  1. Washington Mutual is a strange case.  They are in trouble for sure but they have a wonderful reputation for customer service.

    I wouldn't keep more than $100,000 in ANY bank just in case.  At the same time, I'd not be afraid to bank at WaMu.


  2. Nobody can say for sure. However, of all of the major national commercial banks, WaMu's credit rating has suffered the most. Check AM Best, Moody's, etc. They are considered on the brink by most analysts. But none of those ratings agencies, media, or the government want to be alarmists and shake confidence in the institution, so consider how investers feel:

    In September of last year, WaMu's market capitalization (the value of the company) was more than 66 billion dollars. Today it is about 7.5 billion. That is a decrease in value (and stock price) of roughly 90%. So investers have no confidence in this company.

    I would not bank with WaMu under any circumstances.
