My jacket is a couple seasons old, and still functions, but water is starting to bleed through when it gets really wet. REI sells wax waterproofing, but there is always scotchguard etc. that is silicone. Which is better?

  1. every ski shop carries an aerosol spray that waterproofs coats. it's called nikwax tx direct wash-in. nikwax also makes a product called techwash with is fabulous on gortex jackets...it cleans them up and freshens the smell...you know how your old jacket can get that mildewy smell well, one can of techwash and that smell is all gone

both products cost around $9/can and only does one jacket but that's still better than paying $500 for a new coat

you can read abit about nikwax on their website

    http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/index.php

  2. Use a fluorocarbon water repellent like 303.  It is recommended by fabric manufacturers to retreat the water repellent coating.  You should be able to find this at a marine or outdoor furnishings dealer, or some auto parts, or hardware stores.

  3. The aqueous wax is heavy and is best for leather products like boots. You would be better off to use a spray on or wash in waterproofer specifically made for fabrics - check the label.

    Good Luck
