Question:

Is what I'm doing right?

I bought this GSD puppy about a month ago. I feed him 3 times a day, 8 hours apart. I take him out instantly after feeding and watering him and then put him back in his crate for about 45 minutes. After wards, I take him out again until he poops and pees, then back in my room(without putting him in crate this time). I'm almost always in my room, so I have an eye on him. He doesn't really follow me much so I can't go around the house without picking him up. When he starts going outside, I say "hurry up", and praise him when he's done. I always interrupt him if he started in my room, and clean up while making the crate face the other side(there's no holes on the back). If I didn't catch him doing it, I don't punish him. But it's been a month now, and he still hasn't learned that I don't want him to do it in the house. It gets incredibly annoying by the day. My younger brothers bought a puppy as well, and they're not even trying to housebreak him, and cleaning after him is not a job they're good at, so I have to admit there are rooms in the house that smells like potty area. I know this is affecting my dog, but I also hope that my puppy will learn despite of it.

How long am I suppose to keep going at this so he learns? I wake up almost every hour during the night to make sure he doesn't do any mistakes in my room and I'm having the side effects of someone that didn't sleep for a week. I'm tired all the time. I fainted twice, too.

I have a big family, but they're all afraid of dogs except my little brothers, and they don't take their own dog out, why would they take mine?

In short, how long does this take? And will it even work with parts of the house unclean due to my brother's puppy? I don't think he's a dumb dog, he learned sit, sleep, eat, don't eat, drop, get out, get in, come here, and his name so far and I'm not even practicing with him often.

  1. I can't tell you how long it will take to get him to learn not to pee in the house, but I can tell you that pee spots in the house will be a problem. If he smells a pee spot, he will pee there. Regular house cleaners won't work very well either. My suggestion is to get a cleaning spray that is specifically designed for cleaning up pet messes.

  2. You need to get rid of all traces of the potty smell.  there is soaps and cleaners you can get at teh petstore that remove teh smell adn stains.  You need to keep on at it until he learns.  put him in the crate at nite.  if he does go it will be easier to clean up then on carpet.  as for your younger brother, you need to talk to him about the unsanitary disgusting clean up job.  he is not being a responsible pet owner

  3. Well if you want everything to get better then I would say that everyone would have to pitch in and help because this is a "family" pet you are talking about right? Well, if so then the whole family has to help in, because if you just take care of your dog while your brothers take care of the other, then nothing is going to improve. What did you expect when the new puppy came home? Two dogs in the same household have to be trained the same way. Also taking the dog out every hour will do some good. Get your brothers to start housetraining them and tell your folks that if they don't tell them to do their part of responsiblity that the urine smell is never going to go away because if one dog is not trained, then neither are the others.

  4. How old is he?   3 meals is a good idea if he is a under 6 months old, but 8 hours apart may be too long.  He could be fed at 7 am, noon, and 6 pm.  Everything else you're doing sounds good though.  When you do catch him going in the house, how do you "punish" or correct him?   Do you crate him at night?  After you take him out for the last time, at 10 or 11pm, whenever it is, he can go in his crate for the night.

You might want to get an enzymatic cleaner for the spots where he's gone in the house. Sometimes when a dog smells urine or stool, even after you've cleaned it, he'll feel it's ok to go in the house.  Nature's Miracle works well, or Urine-Off.

    add:

3 months is still very young, it doesn't often happen this soon that a puppy is fully trained.   Dogs normally won't soil their crate, so if you can have him in there at night, from 11 or so until 5-6 the next morning, you should be able to sleep without worrying about the mess.

add 2:  Yes, he will definitely learn this, puppies usually will be able to "hold" either urine or stool an extra hour for every month of age.  So when he's 4 months old, he should be able to go 5 hours between having to go out, at 5 monhs old he can go for 6 hours, etc.  Consistency is the key, and patience.  He sounds like a very smart dog, and you sound like you're putting great effort into it.  Cheer up, it will get better & easier!  Usually by 6 months, with consistent effort, he'll be trained.
