  1. Depends on the level of the river versus your amount of experience.

A beginner like you would not want to start out on a level 5, for example;  THAT would be dangerous. But a baby can handle a level 1 or 2.

  2. Outward Bound is not known for killing off its customers.  Any canoeing or other activity will be thoroughly prepared for ahead of time.  The instructors are generally very experienced and will make sure you know what you need to in order to be safe and have a good experience.

Any whitewater boating has hazards.  It is helpful if you are physically fit and are confident in your swimming skills.  You will undoubtably be required to wear a properly fitted life-jacket and a helmet for any serious water.

It should be tons of fun, somewhat challenging, and more scary than it's actual level of danger really merits.  You will get a great feeling of accomplishment from doing the various activities and learning the skills needed to be successful.  Wish I could go too!
