I know it probly is but, when ever they phone a friend, the person always picks up on the first ring, what's up with that?

when they phone the friend, the "friend" is probably waiting by the phone ready to p**s himself because hes so excited, so he was probably told ahead of time that he might be used as a lifeline.

It's called editing down for time.  The contestants also have as much time as they want to answer a question, and a lot of time is usually taken.  The show just edits out a lot of the nothing in order to get it to fit in the time allotted for the show, while not making the whole show just one or two questions.

I think it's real. I believe when they phone a friend the "friend" is really already on the line, awaiting the contestant to use the lifeline. Hence the picking up on the first ring.
