Is writing return to send on your room mates mail " return to sender no longer lives here" when they still do live there just to F*** with them and p**s them off a federal offense?

My room mate and i have been having issues. She wants me to move out cause i have been on her about how messy she keeps the house and about her drug habit. So she has been doing things to my stuff in the house. Today i found out she has been writing "return to sender no longer lives here" on my mail, I STILL LIVE HERE!! She is stupid thought and insted of putting it in the outgoing mail box she put it in our mail box ( apartment mail boxes) she did this to a bunch of my stock papers and to my banking papers.

Is this a federal offense? if so or not what can i do?

  1. tell the police.

also tell them about her drug habit and then you'll be fine.

  2. Yes it is a federal offense, a felony and you could go to jail.  you just need to send some mail to yourself, with a return address of a family member or friend, and then when she does it you have her handwriting and some evidence.

  3. It's called  MAIL FRAUD & YES< she can go to PRISON,  have your mail be held at your local post office,  or rent a box there......   ROB YOUR OWN HOME & GET RID OF HER ****..........

  4. YES!  Serious federal offense.  Call the postal inspectors.  Look in the phone book under United States Postal Service or go to your local post office and as to file a formal complaint.

  5. probably shes tampering with it.

  6. i would call the post office and ask.

as far as i know, you DON'T mess with the postal service.  the authorities take it very seriously.  they always did, even before 9/11.

you could get a PO box and forward all your mail to that and just go about your business like nothing.  wouldn't she be driven crazy wondering why you're not having issues??

  7. You both need to grow the H up.

It only breaks a fed law IF you open their mail without their permission and its hard to enforce.

  8. Yes it is a federal offense.  Be careful because she can press charges.  When we moved into our house the previous tenants didn't stop their mail... they had been gone for over 3 months and we had to put a stop to their mail through the post office.  At first we were doing what you are doing and then we were told that if these people could prove they lived there at the time we were sending their mail back we could serve jail time.  So, instead we put a stop mail at the post ofice.

I wouldn't do it any more if I were you.

  9. I think a case could be made for mail fraud, yes. You are in fact tampering with someone's mail.

  10. just mark out the persons name who the mail is coming too as well as the adress and you write REFUSED!! in black permanent marker and drop it back in the mail box. not illegal.

  11. Check out this gov website, it talks about mail fraud and has a complaint form to fill out.

  12. Deliberate misdirection of mail is a federal criminal offense.
