  1. In additon to a regular cash account, I have both a margin and a short account.

    The cash account is used for long term (2-6 months) investments, option trading, and regular trading. Since I do not believe in the regular use of margin, borrowing money does not fit my trading/investing rules.

    The margin account is used only for special situations, very seldom is money deposited, usually securities from the cash account are used for borrowing.
    The margin account does not fall below 50% equity.
    The margin account permits marks to market easier,
