  1. Way before, - and don't let the lead paint scare

    spook you.

Lead is only dangerous if it gets into your system.

If the old lead paint is in good shape, or buried under

new paint so there's no paint dust or loose chips for

a kid to eat, (hard to believe, but it has happened),

    it's no hazard to anyone.

  2. Yes  YES

  3. Junior doesn't necessarily have to be "gnawing" on the woodwork. Old paint could have chipped off, or been sanded off outside, the lead gets into the soil, Junior likes to play outside, so does Fido. Junior likes to get dirty, likes to suck on his thumb, Fido likes to run around in the mud and track it into the house where Junior also likes to get into everything while he's sucking on his little thumb.

Let's be real here, kids don't eat paint chips unless they are already so retarded they can't tell the difference between Fruit Loops and dried paint.

If you think there is lead around your house, have your child's blood tested. If he comes up positive, then you start looking for the source.

  4. Don't panic if you have lead paint unless junior is gnawing on the  woodwork, or it is peeling off the walls.  The reason for the concern is if you sand it, it creates minute dust particles which get into your lungs, and you could develop lead poisoning from it.  This is the reason only trained "Lead Abatement" people should remove it, with respirators and special equipment. A dust mask bought at the local hardware store won't protect you at all.  If you are just painting over it, there shouldn't be a problem.
