Question:

Is your insurance higher because you have multiple speeding tickets and no accidents?

Yes I know people who speed are more likely to be in an accident. Is speeding really the root cause or is it not paying attention, overly aggressive driving or something else?

Personally, 2 speeding tickets, no accidents. I have many friends with no speeding tickets and several accidents. Are there studies to correlate only speeding with accidents? Is there a better correlation between cell phone use and accidents. If so, why aren't people ticketed and have rates go up because of cell phone use?

My rates aren't higher, but they will be with my next ticket in the next 2 years. Not all speeders are bad drivers, some are, but not all.

  1. I agree with you and that all speeders are not bad drivers and it is sometimes necessary and if done correctly and with common since the police should be looking for people yapping on their cell phones, watching a dvd, text messaging, or driving with their dog on their lap.

  2. You can be an excellent driver, meaning no tickets, no accidents and your rates go up; to compensate for the poor drivers out there!

  3. It means you are perceived to be more of a risk because of speeding.  This is not to say that speeding is the only factor that would put someone at a higher risk as not paying attention, aggressive driving and drunk driving are also high risk activities, not to mention people who have had multiple accidents.

I don't know of any studies that correlate speeding with accidents but it seems to get the most attention when there is a fatality and speeding is the cause.

  4. Yes, my rates are higher because i have a WICKED amount of speeding tickets. Well... i used to.  Over time they drop off your record (in the state of virginia).  I had like... 7 tickets in 2 years.  some of them were reckless. There was ONE accident, but it wasnt my fault.

I didnt pay my own insurance (cuz i was one of those spoiled rich kids), but i remember my mother doing a happy dance. Cuz i came off Vehicular probabtion and turned 25 in the same month.  My insurance dropped 60%.

Depending on your insurance company will dictate how much your penalized for speeding.  Some dont care as much as others. But your rates will be effected for a ticket, reguardless of what its for.

  5. Insurance companys use many different factors to set and adjust their rates.  The insurance company I used to have increased my insurance premiums by almost $400 a year, just because of one speeding ticket and one point on my license. Needless to say, I quickly changed my insurance to a different company.

  6. Yes, The insurance company believes that if you are driving over the speed limit than you are a higher risk to insure. You might be able to get 1 ticket with-out a rate increase if you have been with the same company for a long time but anything more than that and you will probably pay more money for your insurance.

  7. Ask your insurance agent.  Differs from state to state.
