Question:

Is your older baby picky about texture?

Emma went from eating really mashed food (4 months) to slightly mashed food (6 months) to table food at 7 to 8 months. She has always eaten everything...literally she has not turned away anything. Lately she has been shunning anything with a funny texture...no peaches (too slimy?), no for most pastas, and no for whole veggies (like a whole green bean). Did your baby do this? What do I do to get her to eat better like she used to?

  1. ruby had what our pediatrician called a "consistency intolerance" as a baby. she refused all purees, and if i fed her anything mushy/slimy (ice cream, yogurt, pasta) she would projectile vomit. now, at 15 months, she still refuses all smooth food: yogurt, soups, ice cream. so, yes, she is still picky about texture. the girl likes to CHEW.

  2. yes it's totally normal and probably just a phase.  Just keep trying  even if she rejects the food and eventually she may start eating those things again. I still have a  you MUST try1 bite of everything policy with my 5 yr old.

  3. haah oh yes, she does this too

Pasta, she won't even touch because its too slimmy.

same with most peices of fruit.  Sometimes I will take a small peice of fruit and wrap in a small peice of bread.  Once she starts chewing on it, she realizes she likes it..its just the initial texture she hates.

I think its normal.  Soon they will realize the slimmy and slippery foods taste pretty good!

  4. The books and docs say that babies don't have a preference for warm or cold food either but I think they are full of c**p. My son would never eat anything cold. I had to warm it up or let it set to room temperature before he'd eat it. As far as texture, my kid won't eat much pasta either. I have to sneak it in! No whole veggies either. He eats like a horse and barely turns things down but he goes through stages, one night he'll eat the kidney beans the next he won't and one night he likes spaghetti and the next he won't. They are so funny! I always forget that he is just a little person and is still figuring out what he likes and doesn't like.

  5. YES!!!

Ava used to hate textured foods. If she wouldn't eat it, I fed it to her and she ate it.

She is getting a little better about it now, at 14 months. She used to hate the texture of chicken nuggets, but now she will eat them. Just give it time, she will more than likely out grow this.

  7. it is a sensory thing, some children just cant do certain textures. we have an occupational therapist at our preschool who comes into work with some of our kids because of sensory issues. i think hers is just a phase and it will go away. all of my kids have went through  this and on some days it is better.

some kids dont like mushy things, cold things, grainy things.. just watch it and make sure it doesnt get really bad.  at your next dr. app mention it

  8. My daughter who is 16months went through a similar stage several months ago, give it a few weeks. She was back to eating everything very quickly. In the mean time I hid fruits and veggies in other things.

  9. Nope because I do baby-led weaning not pureed food.

Just keep putting it in front of her and do NOT turn it into a control issue.

  10. YESSSSS!  I'm going through the same thing as we speak!  (I posted a question on this a few days ago and the only response I got was that it was due to teething, which I'm not buying!).  My daughter is 9 months old and since she was about 7 months old she was eating pieces of whole veggies like sweet potato, green beans, potato, zucchini, carrot, etc.  She would feed herself.  And like your daughter mine never refused anything.  Now, even if I put any veggie in her mouth she instantly spits it out.  But she still eats whole pieces of fruit and Cheerios (for now anyway, lol!).  It's so strange!

Tonight I tried something new.  I took some very soft cooked carrot pieces and sprinkled some garlic powder on it.  She couldn't get those pieces in her mouth fast enough!  It was amazing.  So I'm wondering if at some point they start to feel that some things are just too

bland???  I mean, have you tried plain steamed zucchini? LOL!

I'm going to continue to experiment.  Until then, I'm back to mashing up her veggies (except carrots anyway).

    Good luck!
