Sometimes you want to record something off TV to keep or give to someone and a hard drive type just won't do it. Also would it be important for the tuner to be digital?

  1. If you have a tuner card in your PC, it usually comes with a recording program.  These cards can be found for about $20 if you shop around.  One example is the WinTV Go.

If the card doesn't have a recording program, you can use a freeware such as "Virtual VCR".

DVD recorders are coming down in price, taking the place of what people used to use VHS cassettes for.  That stand-alone appliance can be found for $80 or even less, if you shop.  You tell it what time the show is, and it makes a DVD.

  2. I have had TiVo for a year now. Not the Dish TiVo but the original TiVo and a new player/recorder. I can record a TV show to my TiVo and then at school I can download any show or movie onto my laptop. Then all I do is burn the show to a DVD-R. Now I can take the show with me. I also have it in my computer and on my TiVo box at home. I can watch it anywhere I am with the computer or from the DVD-R.

The only way I know of to record something to a hard drive is to have it in a digital format.

I had the cable company's DVR and could not do this. I also had the Dish DVR and I could not do this with it either. I hope this answers your question. Good Luck!

  3. Do you mean DVR not from the cable company? they have it locked up pretty tightly.  It is possible to rent CardSlot (or whatever the name is) cards from the cable company that plug into some of the new models from TiVo. Expensive tho.
