Ishant Sharma could not learn the lesson, says Sanjay Manjrekar
Former Indian batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ishant-Sharma-c64566 had not learned from his mistakes and is a constant concern for the team.
Manjrekar, who is now working as a commentator and a television compare, was of the view that it was high time the Indian selectors re-visited their decision in selecting him for the national team and looked at the other options.
The bowler under discussion proved to be too expensive, and with an average of 48.14 runs, he claimed altogether seven wickets in the three match series against host team, South Africa. On the contrary, the impressive pacer Zaheer Khan bagged ten wickets
with an admiring average of 24.60. Despite claiming nine wickets, Sreesanth remained a little ahead of Ishant with an average of 41.77.
Sharing his views about Ishant in an interview, Manjrekar said, “Ishant has not quite gone to the next level. When we saw him first, he seemed like a world-beater. However, for some reasons he has fallen away. The ball is just not coming out of his hand
properly. His wrist is never behind the ball as much as he would like it. As a result, his bowling is not that potent.”
However, the former batsman, whose own performance has never been that impressive in his entire career, went on appreciating and lauding the performance of Sreesanth. He regarded him as impressive for keeping the seam upright. These were the features which
had turned him in an attacking bowler. Moreover, according to Manjrekar, despite of a lot of bounce and pace, the bowler kept his length a lot fuller.
He also said that Zaheer was lucky to have an ally like Sreesanth, and added that the time had come when the selectors reconsidered their decision of having Ishant in the team.
When requested to share his opinion about Cheteshwar Pujara, who had been brought in to replace Suresh Raina, the Mumbaikar said, “It would be too early to say anything about Pujara. I need to see more of him to form a view. The bouncy tracks in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757
are not ideal for a beginner and judging Pujara on the basis of two Tests would be unfair on him.”
However, when asked about Raina’s future, the commentator said that though the batsman’s technique for the Test matches was not right, it was expected from him to perform well into the one-day and T20 matches.
