Isiah Thomas desires return to top New York Knicks post
In an interview with ESPN, Isiah Thomas talked about his desire to return to the helm of the New York Knicks. When the former team president was asked whether he sees a comeback as a dream, a desire or an expectation, he replied, "Desire or dream... I don't
expect it. But knowing what I know about the game and the relationships that I have, I'm confident that if no crazy (stuff) happens, I think I can win in New York, and I think I was really close to winning in New York."
Targeting LeBron
Thomas said that he targeted LeBron James when he was hired by the Knicks in 2003. He said that he saw James, who played his rookie season that year, as the centrepiece of the Knicks. He added that he would have gotten James to join the Knicks if his stint
with the team hadn't been cut short by a string of losing seasons and a sexual harassment lawsuit.
"I have to believe that... because that was my plan. So I stick to it," he said.
To make a move to New York appealing to James, Thomas said that he acquired players like Eddy Curry and Jamal Crawford.
"They were just all friendly, and they were all on the AAU circuit," he said.
Thomas said that if his plan had gone through, there would have been a chance that James and Dwyane Wade would have signed with the Knicks instead of teaming up as part of the Miami Heat.
"I think if you take away that trial... I'm still there, we make the play-offs a couple of times ... and I don't know if Miami has LeBron or Wade. We may have had LeBron and Wade," Thomas said.
Thomas is currently splitting his time working as a consultant for New York Knicks general manager Donnie Walsh and coaching NCAA Division I team Florida International.
