  1. Both Sunni and Shia Muslims share the most fundamental Islamic beliefs and articles of faith. The differences between these two main sub-groups within Islam initially stemmed not from spiritual differences, but political ones. Over the centuries, however, these political differences have spawned a number of varying practices and positions which have come to carry a spiritual significance.

The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation. Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet's companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad's close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word "Sunni" in Arabic comes from a word meaning "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet."

The basic unit of Islamic society is the family, and Islam defines the obligations and legal rights of family members. The father is seen as financially responsible for his family, and is obliged to cater for their well-being. The division of inheritance is specified in the Qur'an, which states that most of it is to pass to the immediate family, while a portion is set aside for the payment of debts and the making of bequests. The woman's share of inheritance is generally half of that of a man with the same rights of succession. Marriage in Islam is a civil contract which consists of an offer and acceptance between two qualified parties in the presence of two witnesses. The groom is required to pay a bridal gift (mahr) to the bride, as stipulated in the contract. A man may have up to four wives if he believes he can treat them equally, while a woman may have only one husband.

  2. Islam is a difficult religion to study becuase so much is hidden behind the scenes. Islamic law is very strict and women have no rights under it. In Muslim countries where they follow Islamic law women are not even allowed outside without a male relative and they must not be physically seen at all or heard.

Mohammed claimed to have visions when he was fasting in the mountains. His family thought he was possessed when he came back. He lead a group of his followers to attack Medina, Mecca, etc; he was very brutal. The Quran is the Isalmic holy book; the Quran was written after Mohammed's death by some of his followers on stones, bones, etc. (Mohammed could not write.) And that is how Islam started.

Title "What is Islam" This describes history, the laws and differences on Sunnis and Shia, Mohammed's claims, practices, beliefs, etc of Islam. It will probably help you a lot.
