Islamabad ‘A’ leads the way in Royal Palm Amateur Team Championship – Pakistan Amateur News
The 5th edition of the Aquafina Royal Palm National Golf Team Championship commenced yesterday at the exquisite par-72, Royal Palm Golf course in Lahore. It was the Islamabad ‘A’ team who showed their skills and abilities to
lead the three-day team event.
The Islamabad ‘A’ team comprises of Taimur Hassan, Tariq Mehmood and Umair Saleem. All these three players played well but it was the experience of Hassan and Mehmood, who took full advantage of the course conditions. They are in front and are leading
the championship with a team score of 229.
Veteran Hassan played well on the first day. He took advantage of his short game and carded a brilliant round of gross one-over par, 73. Mehmood, who is also a former member of Pakistan National Team, was exceptional on the first day. He posted a round
of gross three-over par, 75 which helped his team go into the lead on the first day. Whereas, Saleem contributed with a score of gross nine-over par, 81.
This team effort helped them emerge in front of the other participating teams.
Royal Palm ‘A’ team follows the leader. They had an aggregate team score of 231 as a few top players contributed to this effort. Muhmmad Rehman had a gross score of 75 followed by Omer Salamat at 77 and Shoaib Bokhari at 79. They jelled together as
a team and played well during the first round. All these three players surprised their opponents with their powerful hitting off the fairways and looked impressive on the greens.
As for Gujranwala, it was the left-handed Saleem Raza and his team-mate Raheel Ikram who played well for their team. Their team member Waqas Khan failed to cope up with the pressure and got carried away. He carded a poor round of gross 85 which did
not help Gujranwala a lot. They are slightly down on the leader board.
Gymkhana ‘A’ finished the first day with a team score of 232. Royal Palm ‘B’ team follows them with a score of 236. Other teams are far behind.
In the individual gross section, Nadeem Abbas of the Sargodha Golf Club led the way. He showed immense quality in shot making and played promising golf on the first day. His score of even-par, 72, shows that he was in good shape with his swing and
was hitting the ball well.
One shot behind Nadeem are three players. Taimur Hassan, Raheel Ikram and Saleem Raza. They all had a score of gross one-over par, 73.
Raza from Gujranwala is a mentionable name. He despite his fractures of hip joint is passionate about playing golf and competing against the best. His round of 73 reflects his hard work on the practice range and his effort.
The second round of the team event will start today.
