Question:

Island-land commuting?

I dream of living on a small island, but going to work every day would be a problem. The island is 2 hours off the coast and during the winter period (september-may) only has ferry once a day.

Would this dream of mine be possible in any way? Would buying a boat of your own be a good idea? I live in the mediterranean, so the weather conditions here are very good.

What do you think of this? Do you know anyone who has done this?

  1. I'm from Nantucket.  A small island about a 2 hour ferry ride from Cape Cod in Massachusetts.  I know people that commute for the week.  They don't live on Nantucket full time but during the work week their employer puts their whole crew up in a house on the island.  They go home every friday and come back monday morning.

I also know of people flying to and from.  This is much better on Nantucket because it's only about a 15 minute plane ride.  There are people who do this at least a couple days per week.

  2. you might want to think about fuel prices and the environment before you decide on an airplane :)  Word is fuel is going up long-term.

Get impossibly good at something you can mostly telecommute, like being a book author or software coder.  Get good landline or microwave (not satellite) internet and have at :)

  3. I live on Sanibel Island, Florida and until 1963 we had a 45 minute ferry ride to the mainland. If you didn't or couldn't make your living on the island the ferry was a giant pain in the neck. Tourist season was a nightmare!

The causeway has brought much more development and opportunity to our little island...good & bad. Even the causeway can take 45 minutes or more during tourist season nowadays! Don't plan on commuting from a home on an island; I would say if you have to leave the island more than a couple times per week, you should just vacation there.
