Question:

Isn't It Impressive That USA is winning the Olympics overall?

I used my own, unique ranking formula, to determine which country is leading the Olympics. I took the medal chart and for each Gold medal won I awarded a country 3 points, silver 2 points, and bronze 1 point. Then I added all of the points together. So, as of right now, here are the standings (and the points total).

1. United States- 197

2. China- 192

3. Russia-104

4. Britain-91

5. Australia- 77

6. Germany- 73

7. South Korea- 59

8. France- 57

9. Japan- 48

10. Italy- 47

That said, as many will point out, I didn't consider a country's population in my equation. If I were to do that, I'm sure China wouldn't be so impressive (since they have well more than a Billion people), and America has a relatively large population as well. But, isn't it impressive that Britain is doing so well?

  1. Ur sooooooooo stupid,China win win win win win win win,ok,get that in ur thick head, and Aussies only 21 million, coming 6th,that's impressive.

  2. Err...they're not...winning the Olympics overall......(unless you come up with a silly system as you have)...

  3. Population-wise, South Korea (25 million) and Australia (21 million) are batting way over everyone else.

  4. HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAAAAAAAAA...    YA IMPRESSIVE LOOOOSER.

  5. you must have alot of time on your hands to figure that out, lol.no offense.go usa.what does pom mean?

  6. An interesting formula, and it is great to see britain doing so well, even though I am an Aussie and we love bashing the poms,it is great for competition to see excellent scores, times, and matches.

  7. I think it isn't surprising for us Americans to do well, since we really care about being on top. The country that I'm surprised about is South Korea. For the longest time, it was third country for the most overall medals.

  8. Look at your list. Most countries listed there are rich nations. Athletes from rich nations can afford the training. It is pretty impressive that the UK is up in the top five... I didn't expect them to win many medals ^^;

  9. I agree.

China, USA and even Russia should be considered in a seperate division.  The UK, Austraila, Germany & France would be among those in the next division.

I would use a different point system.

    1st Gold Medal: 10 points

    2nd Silver Medal: 7 points

    3rd Bronze Medal: 5 points

    4th No Medal:  3 points

    5th No Medal:  2 points

    Finalist finisher 1 point

Playing with the numbers this would make the “Overall “ competition much closer than just looking at the Gold or Total medal counts.  Keep in mind that the 1-point for finishing is important for the spirit of the games.  It is a small reward for those who compete with no hope of winning. Long after the medalist have finished in some of the running and walking races there are people out there that do not quit.

I do not have the 4th & 5th place finishers figured in yet, those numbers are not published as much as the medal counts.  But as you can see the scores are quite close.

  10. Yeah ya doing pretty well. Yeah I am chuffed we haven't come this far in 100 years. Just goes to show GB can always bounce back :P.

  11. Of course it is, keep in mind that we're not a communist nation that removes promising  children from their homes at 3 years of age to become Olympians, USA rocks!!

  12. Sorry. China won. The the majority of people in the world, and the worlds news media count the placings and that is on numbers of gold. I have heard USA papers ranking nations on numbers of medals. Sounds like sore losers to me.

  13. yeah it's surprising that britain are doing so well considering our population is so small in comparison.. but it doesn't really surprise me that USA and china are at the top.

  14. I think its awesome that were beating china considering the fact that humans are their biggest resource.

  15. Maybe and maybe not.

the U.S. and China are the 2 biggest countries and they train a lot of people playing for their own countries even though they trained in China and the U.S. that is why the smaller countries are getting up there in medals.
