The Wimbledon final was great, but people calling it the greatest match ever? I think it's not even the greatest of all Federer-Nadal matches, 2006 Rome Masters final was much better than 2008 Wimbledon. What do you guys think?

  1. I didn't watch Rome Masters..

    It's just their opinion right? .. :)

    So stick with yours..

  2. I'll agree and disagree with you.

I agree that this Wimbledon final is probably being over-billed as the greatest ever. That's not to take anything away from it because it was epic but there were other past Wimbledon finals that were just as gripping as this one.

I disagree however, that the Rome Masters was better but it's a matter of opinion, of course. It's hard for me to consider a best of 3 match, regardless of who's playing or if it goes 3 sets to be better than a best of 5 that goes the distance. A whole different set of factors goes into a match that has to last 5 sets vs 3, especially with so much more on the line.

Good question and you bring an interesting observation to light.

    ******EDIT******

Sorry NBA Fan. Misread the question. Thought you meant the 2008 Final which was terribly confusing since neither of the afformentioned players were in the final. LOL! My mistake. For the record though, I still think Wimbledon was more gripping because it was really more of a changing of the guard.

  3. Yea Wimbledon is stupid.

  4. I don't think the Rome match was better. It was longer, but you expect that from clay. The 2008 match had a lot more drama. Personally I think it ranks right up there among the best matches ever.

But I agree that Wimbledon is not the best grandslam. It's prestigious, but I like the US Open better. Nothing can beat that NYC atmosphere on super saturday.

  5. I've never seen the 2006 Rome Masters, but that match and Wimbledon is definitely not overrated. Federer was two sets behind Nadal and was able to pull it off to a 5th set. That was the most competitive tennis i've ever seen.

  6. Are you kidding me? This was the greatest match of all time, or one of them anyway, because of the importance of the occasion (a Wimbledon final, Federer's streak and possible record on the line, Nadal's possible  rare French Open/Wimbledon double), and the significance of the "changing of the guard" moment as it were, but more importantly because of the level and quality of play from both players.  They were literally slugging it out on each and every shot, with both defending as if their lives depended on it, and both rising to the occasion time and time again when faced with adversity and possible defeat (Nadal saving 12 of 13 break points against him, Federer climbing back from 2 sets to love down and 4 match points against him), until the very end when Nadal finally broke Federer in the 15th game of the 5th set and held his next serve to close it out.  All this after two rain delays, which only increased both the drama and the level of play, which seemed to get better and better as the match went on, and with nightfall encroaching, and all in the most revered tennis tournament in the world.  It doesn't get anymore dramatic than that.  This was much better than the Rome '06 final, although that one was also a classic.

  7. It's the greatest game between the top 2 players.

  8. there were much better matches than this one but wimbledon is not overrated......

  9. even if the match was better theres no way in h**l you can say wimbledon is overrated!

  10. Yes, Wimby is overrated, especially if the officials keep changing the surface. Same with the Aussie Open, the surface changes every other year, or so it feels like. They should all keep their unique surfaces, which is why the different events are so fun to watch and why it is SO hard to win all 4 of them in one year... but to change Wimby's surface and yet call it traditional is hypocritical.

It wasn't the greatest ever. I've seen many FAR better.

  11. No ! Its not overrated. I do agree though there have been many other amazing matches not just the wimbledon 2008 won. !!!
