what is it that you like about it so much?

Personally I think that the way it sustains and protects life is the most phenomenal thing.

As an infrared astronomer it is also very annoying - those greenhouse gases that cause all that trouble (and in fact keep us at a pleasant temperature) also make the atmosphere hard to see through in the infrared. Ho hum.
