Question:

Isn't it outrageous that our legislators have proposed a law that

allows oil drilling off the coast of Florida and Florida residents DON'T EVEN HAVE A SAY IN THE MATTER! We would be forced to accept the ruin of our beaches, environment, and tourism-driven economy.

Other states like Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina would be allowed to refuse to lift a ban on drilling off their coasts, but Florida would not be allowed. There are oil reserves off the coast of California and in Alaska, but these states are not being subject to forced acceptance of drilling off their coasts. Only Florida.

I can not believe that in America, the residents of our 4th-largest state are being denied a voice in preventing the destruction of our environment and lifestyles. Yet we are expected to pony up to feed the rest of the country's oil addiction so people can continue driving their SUV's and trucks. Who is coming to the aid fo Florida and other Gulf Coast states when the idea of a national catastrophe fund is proposed.

Oh, wait, that never gets proposed.

I wonder, what will the homeowners' insurance rates look like in Iowa next year?

As a republican who was going to flip and vote for Obama this year, I am soooooooo disappointed in his flip-flop on this issue.

  1. BUT WAIT................

Your statement isn't true. No state has the power to over turn that ruling. They can delay the process....which would be stupid considering they get taxes from the by product called ...gasoline...

In any event the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 took care of your off shore concerns.

As for driving SUVS and not using mass transportation!!! WHAT ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT FLORIDA IS RANKED # 4 in the states with 1.1 million SUVS on the road! Per capita of drivers to owner it is ranked #3 in SUV operators...2004

In 2006 Florida ranked 3rd in most vehicles registered, following California and Texas . Out of the some 8,735 trucks registered in the state (Pick ups, Vans, SUV, Light Commercial, tractor trucks)  of Florida, 2,318 where SUV. That means 73 percent of all the truck class vehicles registered are SUV. Which translates into Florida being the Number 1 state for SUV ownership per capita, California who showed 4,885 (SUV) out of 12,987 (truck class) finished second at 63 percent.

So I don't know why you would make the comparison as Florida gobbles up more gas then the majority of the rest of the 50 sates and has more income revenue then any other gulf cost state, has received more federal disaster relief than other state in the ENTIRE US COMBINED!!!!

SO yeah Pony up and pay their share put in the dues. Quit being greedy, whining and whimpering  about not having enough money or enough support when you're hit by a disaster. When Florida tops the list in total relief funds and national aid and disaster relief. Florida has received more money from the US government in relief than some countries. How about being responsible and paying it back and sending out a few billion thank you cards to everyone that has helped or payed the taxes that paid for that aid sent to Florida!!!!!

As for Obama...as a democrat who is going to vote for the best man for the job(not Obama)...it wont be old wishy washy pants there....we already have flip flopper in office...who needs the same old thing ...don't need another one!!!!

  2. Don't let your tourism get in the way of what's best for the country. Maybe the next time you request funds for a hurricane relief you just might not get them. How about that? I'm mean, Montana doesn't have hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. but their citizens still would have to pay for your hurricane relief.

Florida takes the biggest chunk of Medicare and Social Security. I'm paying into that. Maybe we should redirect those funds to other states more than we do.

    Spare me.

  3. Either they drill or U start walking. There will be even higher gas prices. A little further South the Chinese are drilling and U think it is alright for them to steal our oil.

  4. Well, I see everyone else has already said what I was going to say. Stop whining and think of all the new jobs that will be created in your state. And just to reiterate, the oil rigs are miles offshore, certainly not blocking out the sun from your pristine sandy beaches.

  5. There hasn't been an oil leak from a platform for over 40 years (even during the Katrina hurricane).  Also oil rigs are way out beyond line of sight so they are not an eye soar.  So tell me why you think you should be allowed to stand in the way of getting resources that we need to help run this country.  And why not put it to a vote at the local level instead of just claiming that your states rights are being neglected?
