Question:

Isn't the US an economically strong country?

This was in an answer I just read:

"Since Japan is an economically strong country, it rarely has children available for adoption."

It stuck out to me because I consider the US to be one of the most economically strong countries, yet we also have this huge adoption rate (according to people here).

Was this an oversight?

  1. The Euro is even stronger then the dollar.....worth 40 cents more (exchange rate).....we are headed towards recession.

The housing market is in danger........oil is too high and  corporations in predominately Arab countries are purchaing American Banks to "bail out" institutions because of the sub-prime lending fiasco.

Bank of America and Citi Corp have large foreign investors.

Stop using your credit cards and feeding the greed. I could go on and on!!! :-P

  2. When Canada moves ahead in the value for the dollar, the USA is having some troubles. I agree with the first poster that says the states is headed into a recession. Unfortunitly for Canada, their never far behind.

  3. The US is not economically strong right now because we owe so much to other countries.

In July 2006, the US government owes Japan over $600 billion; China over $300 billion; United Kingdom almost $200 billion.

Edit - our economic stimulus is being funded by China.

  4. Yes, the US  has a high GDP, but we don't value children or familial ties, most cultures are against giving your child to strangers, some people see giving away children as a good alternative to accumulating debt for example.

  5. I don't think it has much to do with the economy.  It has more to do with how much the respective countries value their families and ancestry.  Japan has strong family values whereas the US splits families apart without as much as a blink and expects everyone to be happy about that

  7. America is in recession and is in serious troubles economically right now.

  8. We are considered economically strong in some aspects but there are a huge majority of people living below the poverty level as well as a population that's probably 3 times larger then Japan.

  9. Great question and about you not watching the news, happens alot. Alot of Americans do not watch the news because of the same reason. Not you but some Americans that don't like watching the news don't because of the negativity but do nothing to change it.

Not only is our oil too high but also there are alot of young couples taking advantage of first home buyer opportunities and getting locked into a mortgage with has a variable APR instead of a fixed APR. Which screws them. In the California and Arizona there are numerous communities that are completely empty do to this fact.

We also have pro football, basketball, and baseball players that get a ridiculous pay. Then you have college grads that gave there all to become something in life and end up not getting the pay they desire and end up losing there passion in what they wanted in the beginning.

Yes we are going into recession and the bad thing is that we as Americans are so spoiled that if it gets real bad we are screwed and it is scary!

  10. Um, we're in a recession, or at least a economic slow down right now.

But I think comparing Japan and the United States is like comparing apples & oranges.

Japan is a single ethnicity country that values family and history.  The US is a country of immigrants  from many countries.

It's better to compare the US & Austrailia when it comes to adoption. We are both 'new' countries, who's main ethnic group came from England.

We used to handle adoption the same way, but they have changed their views on it, dramatically.

  11. The US has a very poor economy right now, and it is headed into a recession.  So no it is not.

  12. We DID have a strong economy... don't you watch the news?

  13. I think over history the US is economically strong, even if we're not at our strongest right now.

However, I do not think the economy of Japan has much to do with why adoption is relatively rare. I think it's more based on cultural attitudes of "family," which are different from US-based views.

  14. No...sadly we are heading towards a recession if we're not already there.

    It's very scary really.
