Isn't the current oil crisis a good thing?

First of all, it makes us aware that we will need to make some serious changes if we hope to save our palnet and way of life.

Without some kind of crisis, we become complacent and have no real motivation to make advancements in science and technology.

  1. In a way it helps. But now oil companies are looking into shale oil, which produces far more pollution then the regular oil we have been getting, although there is a lot more of it.

However our whole world basically depends on oil, and as we face running out, the human race is not fully prepared on how we are going to live without it.

  2. it tells me we need to drill and dig more coal..now is the time to force all government workers into hybreds

  3. no the only thing it tells us is that we need to drill for more oil lol

  4. No not really....when the entire ecoNOMIC system runs on Oil, the spike in price effects everything.

  5. It could be a good thing.  Unfortunately, politicians are using this as an in to drill in wildlife preserves in Alaska and in restricted areas off the coast of Florida.  If we allow them to do this, then it can turn into a very bad thing.

This is a great time to lobby for alternative energy and raise awareness.  But, we also must not allow politicians to take away the safeguards we have provided our native wildlife in the name of stopping the crisis.

  6. But even if the crises is a lie???

  7. Yup. The only time that governments and citizens decide to make a real change is when there's a crisis on hand. Look at what has come about from the Oil Embargo of the 70's. Countries like Germany, Brazil and France produce alot of their own Biodiesel for fuel and Brazil leads the way for being truly energy independent.

This is the best time for Americans to realize the abundance of natural power and develop/harness it. For example, think about how LA would have been off just last week when the record heats caused an overuse in electricity and just 15-30% of those homes that were hit with blackouts had solar power. The city would've had some help with the ease in usage and there might have been some help with those who could've produced more than their needs and gave back to the grid.

  8. The planet doesn't need saving.

Simple law of conservation of mass. The carbon in oil and natural gas existed in the air before the plants and animals died and were turned into oil. We're just putting it back into the air.

  9. I think so!  The current oil crisis will result in a decrease in consumption and that will improve the Young's modulus of elasticity for most, if not all, of our levees.  Cr-Mo steel rules!!

  10. I do think it is a good thing. It is waking people up to the fact that the world is addicted to oil and that we better do something about it before it is too late. By too late I mean for whatever reason floats your boat, like global warming, or oil spills, or US reliance on oil from political enemies, or just the world using up a resource that has a limit and will some day be all gone.

  11. It's not a good thing nor a bad thing. If you like being an informed person you can document yourself and see that cold fusion does work, that reliable electric cars exist, that last week in Japan they unveiled a car that works on water. And I'm shure that there are other tons of alternatives to fossil fules available. But none of them will be applied on a global scale until the last drop of oil has been sucked out of this planet. Why you might ask? Because every thing in this shallow world ultimately relates to money. It's not in the interest of the big oil nations to use those alternatives yet so they keep them hanging until to make all the money they can out of conventional fuel sources and then, when those become unavailable they can promote the "newly" found alternative sources of energy  10 times or more their initial value. So oil crysis or not it wouldn't make a difference. During the long run, whatever we do, the atmospere is still doomed to intake the same amount of CO2 from all of our oil available on our planet, be it in 10 years, 50 years or 500 years. It may sound like some farfetched conspiracy theory, but look at it from a logical point of view and look at what's going around the world right now and you'll see the truth. It's a sad thing and it really pisses me off.

It's not about improving technology, or teaching people to be hardcore environmentalists, it's about changing mentalities and repromoting now ancient values. Because lets face it, it's greed that got us into the mess this planet's in right now (greed for money, greed for land, greed for having too many children - the last one shockingly being one of the greatest reasons for the existance of global warming!).

  12. It depends solely on how aware a person actually is.

But now that it seems to be a fad with people to go "green" and what not, and peoples tendency to follow the herd, it may be a good thing.

  13. No I see hundreds in my area where top wages are $7. a hour, using credit cards for fuel, and groceries. We will see the largest numbers of bankruptcys take down more banks.

  14. The way I see it, a recession is like a forest fire.

    A lot of people panic

    A few people get burned

A lot of deadwood gets cleared out

The whole system is healthier as a result.

  15. It is good for me personally, it leads to job security. I don't like what it is doing to the rest of the country though.
