Question:

Isn't the possible troop withdrawal from Iraq just shifting assets?

I read the story to mean that the troops won't be coming home but will be reassigned to Afghanistan. I see the necessity but it doesn't equate with a reduction of forces.

Is the pentagon planning to have an overall reduction in the Middle East?

  1. It's reported that Iraqi security is controlling much of the country save some areas.

Afghanistan really needs help. I believe it's important to ensure that the elected government doesn't fall.

  2. Well, the problem is they can have their cake and eat it, too.  You see, contrary to what seems to be the common belief, Afghanistan is not part of the Middle East.  It's part of South Asia, like India and Pakistan.  So, even if they pull troops out of Iraq only to send them to Afghanistan, they have still reduced troops in the Middle East.

  3. Well, I know that Obama would remove troops from both Iraq and Afghanistan. I would not call the troops an asset, but that is how are government treats them sometimes.
