Isn't there an Etymology section?

I love Etymology, but I am surprised to have found no sections on it. Is this the only section to learn about names and their meanings/origins?

  1. Yay for you.. many people do not "get" the difference between surname etymology, and genealogy.  They are not the same.

Yahoo lumps them together in genealogy, because they both connect to family and surnames.

Here is one site that you may like.  I just encourage you to stay away from sites that want to sell keychains and the like, or that don't offer any scholarly source for their info.

You may be thinking of etymology in general, not just names.. if yes, then I agree that words might be the right area, maybe languages.

  2. UK answer.

I think it is actually, although there may be a forum for baby names over in the pregnancy and parenting forum,? not sure about that though. I have got a couple of sites for you to look at though concerning etymology

    Hope this helps.

  3. Since Etymology is the study of the history of words, try the EDUCATION AND REFERENCE section's "Words & Wordplay " area.

This section is finding out where your ancestors came from, when they lived, their families' ties to you, etc. People do ask about the origins/meanings about their surnames (or last names), but that is just a drop in the bucket as far as genealogy goes.
