"It makes a difference being a Grand Slam champion at any tournament, not just Wimbledon," he said after his runner-up effort at Queen's. "You have a lot of confidence. You approach every tournament in a different way, with more belief. You know that you're on the top. In my case, I'm happy that I can play great tennis on all kinds of surfaces, which makes me an all-around player, which is very important in today's tennis."

Novak Djokovic

what do you think of this statement?

it makes me sick.-

  1. Ok, you have to be thinking very nasty to even say that this is discusting. The person could really just be talking about tennis.

only immature people would think of it otherwise.

  2. Well Being an ALL AROUND PLAYER is for the Critics decide. And if she played against Maria Sharapova she would be drained. Its pretty distgusting bragging about her being all around not even Tiger Woods has said that only what we see on national TV makes Tiger an All Around Player

  3. that's one of the reasons i don't like this guy, his complete lack of humbleness.-

he's good, no one denies that, but he just acts like he's the best player that's ever lived, i mean who is he to say that roger is scared by the upcoming tournaments?

    he's just way too cocky.-

it makes me sick too :)

  4. What's so wrong about having confidence?  He should have a lot of confidence, and everything he said is true.  I appreciate his candor, it's refreshing compared to the same old safe  and guarded comments we hear from most of the players.  And Djokovic has the game and the results to back it up too.  More power to him.

  5. Well im not a Novak fan, i dislike him i do give credit tho because he is a good player. I think what he means is ppl look at you more, they think your important having won a grandslam therefore he has more confidence. I duno its Djokovic here... lol! enough said :P!

  6. you've got the wrong idea

  7. I honestly don't see how its disgusting. He's making a point, he is quite the all round player, though he could come to net more often. He makes a valid point as well, all of the pressure about him being the phenom that he was was let off when he won the Aussie. It showed that he belonged in the top10 and more importantly, the top 5. There is nothing wrong with being confident. In fact, quite the contrary, if you don't have confidence in yourself, or your game, how do you expect to win? In order to be at that level, all the players must have the confidence in themselves and more importantly, their games.

And to all those who say he belittled Roger Federer:

""I played some of my best tennis ever [at Wimbledon 2007]," said Djokovic. "But I don't think Roger's dominance in the game is finished, no. I absolutely deserved to win against him in Australia but he's going to come back in big style. He's still planning to be the best player in the world. We all know how good he is," he says."

    -Novak

He gives respect where respect is due. He is right when he said that he deserved to win in Australia, Federer was clearly beaten by the better player. Novak still respects Roger's accomplishments, and knows where his place is.

  8. Personally I don't see what's so disgusting about the statement. However I can understand what you are so upset about. I believe when he said: "It makes a difference being a Grand Slam champion at any tournament, not just Wimbledon,"... it can be implied that he is referring that winning Wimbledon is not anymore significant as opposed to winning the other three majors.

In tennis most commentators, analysts, reporters and fans alike, tend to rate up the person that wins Wimbledon a lot more than someone who wins any of the other three majors. Remember how it was when Sharapova won Wimbledon. For over two years after she won in '04, all you ever heard was "Wimbledon Champion Maria Sharapova" in every sentence that people spoke of her. You rarely ever heard "French Open Champion Anastasia Myskina" or "US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova" when people spoke of those two.

I guess thats just the nature of the sport. Wimbledon is by far the richest and most prestigious of all tennis tournaments and the Grandslams. Therefore when someone wins Wimbledon they have the right to brag about it and be constantly praised for that accomplishment.

So maybe Djokovic is just trying to say that winning a Grandslam is an accomplishment in itself and that we should not rate one over the other as more prestigious, or more difficult or more noteworthy. Or maybe he is saying that Wimbledon is no different from any other slam and therefore he should receive the same amount of praise and validation for winning the Australian Open, as the person that wins Wimbledon tend to normally receive throughout their entire career.

Whatever point he is trying to make, I believe from the entire quote he was just trying to say that winning a Grandslam gives you more confidence upon entering tournaments and that he believes he is an all-around player, which has always been a rarity in mens tennis.

The quote that I found to be a bit disgusting was this one he made about Roger Federer:

“Some things are changing. I think he’s a little bit shaken with that loss (French Open final) and mentally he has been struggling in the last couple of months,” Djokovic said earlier this week in London. “New names are coming, fresh talented players who believe more they can win against him and I am one of them. Suddenly he is worried a little bit.”

LOL Somebody really needs to tell this guy to shut the h**l up, if he cares about people liking him as much. Okay he has a point, however to phrase it the way he did is just plain disgusting and shows how classless he can be at times.

  9. Whatever makes him ready for the tournament. He has walked the talk for the past year. So, why not? I have no problems with braggadacios as long as they deliver and deliver he does.  After the draw was announced, he did however respond to the negative publicity that was created after his earlier comments about Roger's chances:

"I played some of my best tennis ever [at Wimbledon 2007]," said Djokovic. "But I don't think Roger's dominance in the game is finished, no. I absolutely deserved to win against him in Australia but he's going to come back in big style. He's still planning to be the best player in the world. We all know how good he is," he says.

But this is Rafa's tournament this year. His form, the draw and the pundits are mostly leaning towards him.

  10. I don't really understand why that's disgusting... but sure!

  11. how is it disgusting?

  12. What is so disgusting about it?

  13. doesn't make me feel like anything

  14. what is so disguisting about it?

  15. I think you should take some pepto bismol and call it a day. One day when you grow up you'll understand what he's saying.

  16. Not disgusting.....Sorry
