Isner/ Querrey oust Kudla/ Young in the quarterfinals of US Men’s Clay Court Championships
Wildcard pair of Denis Kudla and Donald Young got defeated by the American pair of John Isner and Sam Querrey at the quarterfinals of the tournament. The American duo won the match in two sets, 7-6(5), 6-1, taking one hour and
five minutes to step into the semi-finals of the tournament. An ATP World Tour 250 Series event, the tournament is in its 14th edition.
With this win, the pair has extended their season win tally to five matches. Isner and Querrey made their previous appearances at this occasion in 2009, where Isner partnering Travis Parrott moved past David Martin and Sam Querrey
in the fourth round, before losing to the world’s number one doubles pair Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the quarterfinals.
The winning duo had excellent co-ordination against their contenders. The winning pair bagged 50 percent breakpoints in total as opposed to their opponent’s meagre 38 percent. In addition to this, they had an outstanding first
serves conversion rate of 70 percent on first serves and 67 percent in total. Though the winning pair spilled two double faults throughout the match, but their over-all performance was fully justified to take the lead.
First set started in an aggressive fashion by both parties, exchanging almost equal number of serves in the first set. Isner and Querrey were a bit more active than their opponents as they converted many opportunities to their
advantage. Kudla and Young’s inefficient performance awarded their opponents with 5 break point opportunities, three of them they converted to push the set into a tie-breaker. At this situation it looked as if Kudla and Young will easily wipe them out but
situation didn’t follow the expected suit. Isner and Querrey displayed their efforts skilfully to collect 67 percent of points on first serves and 60 percent break points to steal the set with a 7-5 score.
The second set was even easier for the winning duo, as they took it with a breadstick win. Their opponents played poorly as they only managed to collect a meagre 14 percent on their first serves. Furthermore they double faulted
three times making it easier for the opposing pair to win it 6-1.
In the semi-final Isner and Querrey will take on Eric Butorac and Jean-Julien Roger who are second seeded, behind Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in the tournament. Butorac/Roger defeated the Australian pair of Ashley Fisher and Stephen
Huss to take a spot in the semi-finals.
