Isner/Querrey stun Mirnyi/Nestor to earn a doubles title shot – BNP Paribas Open 2012
Another surprising outcome was witnessed in the doubles semi-final round of the BNP Paribas Open, with the underdog American pair of John Isner and Sam Querrey defeating the second seeded duo of Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor on
Friday night. The unseeded pair took just 62 minutes to outshine the hot favourite team of Mirnyi and Nestor in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to advance into the final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells, California.
A huge crowd came out to see their local lads outgunning the Belarusian-Canadian duo in the semi-final round. Isner and Querrey simply outplayed their second seeded opponents in all segments of the game to come out as the winner.
The Americans went for the aggressive approach right up in the contest and kept on building pressure over Mirnyi and Nestor to force them to cough costly mistakes.
Isner and Querrey were exceptional with their serve game, delivering 70 per cent of the first serve on target and winning 26 out of 35 points on it to drive the second seeded opponents out of the competition in a convincing fashion.
They crafted four break opportunities in the match and converted three out of them, whilst Mirnyi and Nestor kept lagging behind with no break points registered in the entire contest. The second seeds had four vital break opportunities in the match but it
was the sheer brilliance of the Americans which didn’t allow them to convert a single chance.
The opener took off with steady tennis from both duos but the pace of the game was suddenly changed as soon as the American pair nailed the first break point of the day. Isner and Querrey held on to their lead and bagged the opening
set at 6-4 to get one up in the match. They turned even more aggressive in the following set and went on to sting two more break points to race away to victory at 6-2.
Isner and Querrey will face the other surprise duo of Marc Lopez and Rafael Nadal in the final of the BNP Paribas Open for the title.
