Isn’t He Clever bypassing the Kentucky Derby for the Preakness Stakes
J. Kirk Robison and Judy Robison owned 3-year-old gelding, Isn’t He Clever was 21st on the graded stakes earnings list that was to determine whether who will make the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby gate at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012, but
it seems it doesn’t matter anymore as the Steven Asmussen trained colt is to bypass the Derby to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on 19 May, 2012.
The Kentucky bred son of Smarty Jones failed to down a graded stakes race in his eight race career, but did win the Riley Allison Futurity at Sunland Park as a juvenile, and made an impression when he won the Borderland Derby also at Sunland Park on 25 February,
2012.
The race that helped him muster up a little graded stakes earnings that he did was the Grade 3, $800,000 Sunland Derby, where he finished a second to winner, Daddy Nose Best, on 25 March, 2012, at about 1 1/8 miles.
Out of mare Sharp Minister by Deputy Minister, Isn’t He Clever was nowhere to be seen his last Derby prep race, when he ran in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park and finished a troubled eighth to winner, Bodemeister.
It is still a good career so far for Isn’t He Clever, as he won or placed in eight career starts with a bankroll of $395,293.
In his juvenile season, Isn’t He Clever started at Zia Park, and won his maiden special weight race at first asking, going five and a half furlongs in 1 minute and 2.15 seconds on 3 September, 2011.
He bagged another race over at a same distance. It was Zia Park’s allowance race, where he defeated Brick Maker is second and Flame Broiled in third, with the winning time of 1 minute and 3.35 seconds.
Isn’t He Clever was introduced to Remington Park’s dirt course to run over a distance of seven furlongs in the Clever Trevor Stakes, but Officer Prado for the better of him, as Isn’t He Clever finished second on the day.
Optimizer will not take Isn’t He Clever’s place on the graded stakes earnings list, and it is still not certain that Isn’t He Clever will run in the Preakness Stakes, because he is also cross entered in the Grade 2 Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park on 9 June.
