  1. And what stable, safe and disease free county would you suggest in either of these two areas ?     No it's not about time for any of them to get an Olympics; not now, not ever.

  2. Brazil has a real chance at the 2016 summer olympics.  It's made it to the final round of bidding.  It's between Chicago, Tokyo, Madrid and Brazil.  Frankly, I'm really rooting for Rio de Janiero.  It would be the first time any south American country got the Olympics - it's about time too frankly.

I'm not sure how Africa would pan out - is there a viable country with the infrastructure to support such a large scale event - the money to build and host the athletes?  The facilities for all the guests that will come?  The stability to ensure their safety?  South Africa and, maybe, some of the northern countries.  But still, it's a bit dodgy.

  3. Hi your question is quite valid, but its not down to them not getting it its down to can they afford to build and host the olypics. Why not Iran or Syria or Pakistan or even India. Los Angeles was only on because the country awarded it could not finish it after 3 yrs. Montreal is still paying off the bill for their hosting it over 30 yrs ago

  4. South Africa are hosting the next World Cup (football) in 2010, which will be huge. In fact South Africa regularly hosts major international sporting events, and since 1994 has successfully managed some of the biggest - including the 1995 Rugby World Cup, and the 2003 Cricket World Cup.  Not sure about South America, but Africa will have their hands full for the next few years!

  5. If you don't ask you don't get.

They don't have the money anyway which is probably why.

  6. Definitely yes.

  7. Africa doesn't have a hope of hosting it anywhere, as one never knows whether war will break out in whatever part, and many African countries people are starving so that's not exactly right to waste that much money when your people are dying. South America maybe, but sorry i can't see it happening.

  8. Certainly.  Only problem is that for most countries putting on and paying for the Olympic Games will break the bank or even worse, shove an already poor nation into everlasting debt.

I'm entirely in favour of Africa and South America hosting the Olympic Games - but there is the awesome matter of finance.  Even if the money could be raised, it would leave massive debts which only a few rich nations can really afford.

Even London, where I live, with its massive wealth, is going to be lumbered with huge debts and will probably be paying off the cost of the 2012 London Olympics for a generation at least.

BBC NEWS | Politics | London Olympics could cost £9bn 24 Feb 2007 ... The cost of the 2012 London Olympics could rise to nearly four times ... transport figures to reflect 2012 prices and a revised estimate for ...

So, back in February 2007, the then estimate for the London 2012 Olympics was already a staggering £9bn - we can easily add a couple or so more billion to that already gross pile of debt.

Mind you, if London stopped giving £3.5bn a year to Scotland, perhaps we could then pay off the cost of the 2012 London Olympics in three or four years.

    In yer dreams brov'. . . . .

  9. South America should get a chance to host the games but public concern over security issues remains in Rio de Janeiro, as well as transportation issues, which had some difficulties during the Pan Am Games which were held recently in Brazil, also many of the key facilities will be located far from the iconic Ipanema beach area.

  10. Most definately. London will have hosted 3 times by 2012.

The world bank should fund the games for a country in Africa or South America. It would leave the host country/city with a legacy. Many of the buildings at Olympics can be converted  for other uses after the games.

i.e. athletes accomdation parks can be converted into housing.

A stadium can be easily converted to be a market.

The road network put into Olympic village can be used for establishment of industrial park.

It's not difficult if the will is there.
