Question:

Isolated areas of the yucatan?

I want to take a trip to the Yucatan, and possibly Belize and Guatemala. The problem is, I want to stay far, far away from touristy areas like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Basically, I want to visit some very isolated beaches and Mayan ruins. I've been unable to find any relevant information online, as everything that I've come across has focused on touristy areas. Any advice/recommendations for me?

  1. Click the link below for a map of all the archaeological sites on the peninsula.  Campeche is a nice town that few people get to see.  Majahual is layed back, but when a cruise ship stops there, it gets a little crazy--but then they're back on their ship by dark.  Piste is the little town next to Chichen Itza and it's a nice place to stay.

More tips on tripadvisor site (second link).

Check out a travel guide in a book store, it will have many, many more suggestions.

  2. Other than the Cancun, Playa and Cozumel area the whole peninsula is fairly isolated and untouristed.Tulum, Chichen Itza and to a lesser degree Coba and Uxmal are the popular touristed Archaeological sites. There are dozens more that seldom see a tourist. There are miles of underground caverns, ruins still overgrown with jungle.Small Mayan towns and colonial cities, miles & miles of beautiful, pristine isolated beaches. water falls and jungle rivers, mangrove swamps, wildlife such as flamingos, crocodiles, parrots, monkeys, iguanas etc. There's no shortage of wonderful things to see beyond the glitz of Cancun. And....there IS a wealth of "relevant" accessible  information, maps and photos online.

    Buena suerte!
