Israel v Spain at Corfu – European Championship Division Two Twenty20 (3rd place play-off) – Match Update
Quick-fire half-tons from Tariq Ali and Nisar Ahmed enabled Spain to clinch a 90-run win over Israel at Maessonghi on September 8, in the 3rd place play-off of the 2012 European Championship Division Two Twenty20 played in Corfu.
Spain won the toss and decided to bat first, with the top five batsmen delivering a concentrated performance which enabled their side to post a daunting total of 258, despite the efforts of Israel’s Shailesh Bangera (3-0-32-2), Shifron Waskar (4-0-45-2),
and skipper Herschel Gutman (4-0-48-2).
Armaghan Khan (29) and Tariq Ali (58 off 18) opened the innings for Spain, and their partnership continued steadily, yielding 78 runs before http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Raymond-Aston-c84289 off Waskar.
With the team at 88 for 2, Christian Munoz-Mills (17) and Venus Valiente (44) stepped up to the crease, and picked up seamlessly from where their predecessors had left off, setting up a 46-run stand for the 3rd wicket, which got their side up
to 134. Munoz-Mills was dismissed by Bangera, but Valiente went on to partner Nisar Ahmed (50 off 19) for a 28-run stand.
Valiente became Bangera’s second victim of the day, but http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nisar-Ahmed-c79687 soldiered on, setting up a 25-run stand with Farhat Mahmood (9), followed by a 44-run 7th wicket stand with skipper Mark Spencer (7).
Nisar Ahmed was eventually sent packing by Gutman, while Spencer was dismissed by Gerrit Grundling. A final unbeaten 19-run partnership between wicketkeeper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Yasin-c77454 (18*) and Talat Nadeem (7*) got the team up to a total of 258 by the end of 20 overs,
at the expense of 8 wickets.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Israel-c2925’s innings also yielded two half-centuries – however, hampered by Talat Nadeem (4-0-27-2), Tanveer Iqbal (3-0-21-1), and Sajad Ali (4-0-47-1), they were unable to complete the chase successfully, restricted to 168 by the end of 20 overs.
Openers Gutman (11) and Yefeth Nagavkar (17) chipped in with useful contributions, but it was the efforts of Josh Evans (52) and Bangera (64*) that drove the team forward.
Their 80-run 4th-wicket stand propelled the team to 126, but following the dismissal of Evans at the hands of Sajad Ali, Israel lost their momentum, and by the end of 20 overs, with Bangera and Waskar (4*) at the crease, the team finished at 168
– 90 runs short of the target.
