1. no,the situation isn't that bad to bring cold war,but it make middle east conflict worse.because before that,US and Russia were a little united and friend.but now this a little has gone.so..........

hey tallest4... we already have advanced air defense systems and this sanctions can't help anyone.........we have a lot of these sanctions.:)

  2. Nice Answer from Gordon B,

One thing about the Russia-Georgia conflict you forgot to mention that directly affects the Middle-East is the current US standoff with Iran.

The US will not get any consensus from the UN security council about further sanctions against Iran until this US-Russia dispute is over! I can almost see Ahmadinijad breathe a sign of relief.

Furthermore, if the US and Israel try to act unilaterally against Iran using air strikes, Russia could counter the perceived NATO naval aggression in the Black Sea by selling more advanced air defense systems to Iran. This could been downed American and Israeli pilots over Iranian territory (a huge PR victory).

  3. A rather complicated analogy, but still well put- though technically, Georgia isn't part of the Middle East, though it is relatively close.

While no one's attempting to bring back the Cold War, the Georgian-Russian conflict is reminiscent of Afghanistan and Russia's incursions into Eastern Europe. Neither side is actually interested in solving the issue, so much as they are concerned with ensuring victory for their pawns. The US is an "ally" of Georgia in that the US wants Georgian and Black Sea oil. If the break-away provinces succeed in gaining independence, then they will side with their ally, Russia (who, like the US, is wants a secure, steady, and cheap supply of oil).

What makes this conflict different from the Cold War is that the conflict is more about oil than it is about territory and ideology. If the situation were reversed (with Georgia being pro-Russia and the US siding with the secessionist regions) than Russia would do all in it's power to keep the Georgians from losing their provinces. While all of this does not directly affect the Middle East, there are certain effects that may take place. For example, Georgia was once made up one of the largest percentages of the coalition forces in Iraq. Currently, the US has allowed the Georgian coalition forces to return to their own country, which is good for the Georgians, but bad for the US's Iraq agenda. With a the sudden troop vacuum created by the absence of the Georgian forces, violence in Iraq will quite probably sky-rocket, with the US taking the brunt of the attack. Iran, Syria, and Palestine, however, should remain largely unaffected by the crisis.
