January 1st 1901 Australia became a independent nation of six separate states. Queensland, New South Wales , South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania became known as the states of the Commonwealth of Australia.

Sir Edmund Barton officially became the first Prime Minister and the Australian constitution came into force and all colonist living in Australia became officially citizens of Australia and the first of January 1901 is known as Federation Day.
