Question:

Issues when running......?

Now that the temps are warmingup, Im running outside a lot more often. The problem seems to be that besides an occasional cramp, most often my right shoulder will tense and tighten up. I dont get it? I stretch and all prior to running but for whatever reason my shoulder will get that way and it almost forces me to stop running. Any ideas?

  1. Make sure that your shoulders are relaxed, meaning down and back not up by your ears.

Free arm movement will also help.  Let your arms swing naturally.  Your arms should be bent at 90 degrees or slightly less.  When your arm swings down, your hand should stop by your hip.  When your arm swings up your hand should stop out in front of anywhere from your chest to your eyes (depending on how fast you're going).

Hydration can also play a role in cramps/tense muscles.  Try to get in at least 3-4L of water daily.  Also make sure that you're getting enough potassium.  Maybe a banana a day?

  2. A few things could be causing this.

Dehydration - this won't cause the extreme pinching that you are feeling, but it does contribute.  Yes, water will help, but also make sure you're getting enough salt to facilitate the electrolyte distribution(Accelerade).

    Cramping - yes bananas help.

Other - I had similar symptoms last year.  I would have to rub out my shoulder often.  I was afraid that it was nerve or cardiac related.  The fix for me was taking it easy.  I would recommend massaging it after every run, and decreasing your pace on the hot days.  Your cardio will take a bigger hit when the temp increases so don't worry about not getting a good workout.  Good luck!
