It's Tricky retired due to off-hind ankle injury
After Frankel in UK, the career of another great runner came to an end last week, when the 3-time US Grade One winner, It's Tricky, quit professional racing following an injury to her off-hind ankle.
The situation was described by trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, saying that the 4-year-old sustained the beginnings of condylar fracture during the practice session. The daughter of Mineshaft was getting ready for the Ladies' Classic, when the injury got worse.
"She worked well and the next morning when we went to look at her, she had heat and inflammation in her right hind ankle. No surgery will be required - we just have to stop on her and at this point, she'll go on to her new career as a mother," said McLaughlin.
Owned by Godolphin Racing LLC, the filly did a lot of goods during last few years. She started her career on a high, when securing three back-to-back triumphs.
After enjoying success thrice, she jumped up to the graded level, but failed awfully. Yet, she did not lose determination, and subsequently grabbed two consecutive Grade One victories.
After proving too good for the opposition at Belmont Park, she went to Saratoga, and dominated the proceedings in the Grade 1, TVG Coaching Club American Oaks in July last year.
The Stonerside Stable-bred recorded her third Group One win in May this year. After winning a couple of Grade 2s, she was full of confidence, but the pressure was equally big.
She kept her cool to take a shock ¾-length win in the Ogden Phipps Handicap at Belmont Park. After tracking the leader is second on outer, she increased her pace to cut down the margin.
She kept on well under pressure to challenge the leader inside the final furlong, and eventually edged ahead close home. It was a marvellous act, as the filly did not give her rivals any chance whatsoever.
The four-year-old could not spark on her last two starts, but both defeats were not disgraceful. It's Tricky’s retirement is certainly a huge blow not only for the connections, but also for lovers of the game. Considering the amount of talent that she possesses,
one can expect her to give birth to a few extraordinary runners.
