I've sent emails, and there has been no replies. Should I report my employer? If so, to whom?

As well, should I continue to work?

Please help!

  1. Don't try the link that the other guy gave you. the aw surveys are a scam. i tried it my self, it doesn't work!!!!

  2. Cease all work immediately, contact the employer by phone first if possible then by email with the highest urgency.  Give them a few days to reply. If no response, you may want to copy your correspondence to the local workforce commision or labor board for more aggresive action.

  3. Depends on who you work for -- if it's some weird Internet scheme, the prospects look a little bleak.

But if you're like my mother and work from home for a "real" local firm, give them a call. You don't have to be confrontational or anything, just say something like, "Hi, I don't know if you've gotten my emails, but it's been a month since my last paycheque; I was wondering if there was any news on that. When should I come pick it up?" If they're being dodgy with the communications, maybe consider showing up instead. Are there other staff you can ask privately whether they're being paid?

They might have some clients who are being really slow to pay or they had a sudden expense, or your pay is under a pile of paperwork. Most of the time, the reasons for a late pay are totally innocuous -- the bookkeeper is out sick, the owner is on vacation, that kind of thing.

If whatever they tell you isn't satisfactory or you have a feeling that your last pay was your last pay, you're well within your rights to start rejecting the work they send you. If they make a stink about it, ask them what they would do in your position.

As to the governing body, that would be your state/provincial labour board. Being stiffed on your pay happens enough that the responsible government agency is easy to track down and navigate the complaints process.

Good luck. It sucks when something like this happens.
