Question:

It's legal, don't worry-- stinky cannabutter?

I promise that this was all legal, we live in California and my friend and I both have prescriptions for medicinal marijuana. I decided I wanted to try baking so she wouldn't have to smoke, which irritates my asthma. I made the cannabutter with a friend of mine a couple weeks ago, which went perfectly fine. We also made a batch of beautiful delicious and potent rice krispy treats which went well.

Last night I went over to the same friends house where we were keeping the butter. We started to make another batch of rice krispies, but as soon as we opened the butter there was some serious stank. Cannabutter always has a light weedy aroma, but this smelled exactly like p**p. It was like a fresh curried t**d was steaming on the table instead of our lovely cannabutter. We carried on and made the rice kripies anyway, gagging the entire time, and once the butter was heated the smell went away.

I want to know if this is normal or safe to eat. For whatever reason, my friend kept the cannabutter in the pantry rather than the fridge, so it had been out for a couple weeks. Other than the disgusting smell, it didn't look any different. What's the verdict. Can I eat these safely?

  1. Never ever ever store it at room temp.  The butter will attract bacteria.  I would only use it if you are going to cook it to a decent temp.  I suggest a nice bannana nut cannabutter cake.  Use this batch for cooking and make another for your sandwich.
