The New York Times has announced that both Universal and Paramount have ended exclusive ties with HD DVD. They are commited to releasing some movies in HD DVD still but are no longer HD DVD exclusive. Everybody chime in. I wold like to hear everyones opinions.

  1. I've been waiting for the format wars to end before I'll even consider buying a high definition DVD player, but I was secretly hoping that Blu-Ray would win out simply because it has a higher capacity per disk (50GB vs. 30GB).  I'd like to someday have a Blu-Ray burner for my PC, and as you know, you can never have too much storage available on a PC.

  2. I just got back from CES '08 (Consumer Electronics Show, for those of you not in the industry) and the Blu-ray and HD DVD booths were right next to each other on the show floor. There was much more buzz surrounding the Blu-ray booth than the HD DVD booth when I was in the area. Blu-ray just announced this past Friday that Warner Brothers was going Blu-ray exclusively. Plus, sales data from 2007 shows that Blu-ray media (let alone Blu-ray players) is outselling HD DVD 2-to-1. I think that Universal and Paramount jumping ship right now is, as the industry reporters put it, just another nail in the HD DVD coffin.

  3. It sucks!  I honestly believe that HD-DVD is still the best consumer-friendly format from a customer's viewpoint.  Even while Blu-Ray has Profiles 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 to iron out.  HD-DVD from the get-go had ethernet updates and internet connectivity, picture-in-picture built-in from day one.  Even though I rooted for the underdog and invested in a Toshiba HD-A2, now I'm screwed on all of the movies and need to buy a Blu-ray now.

I'll just end up waiting another year until Blu-Ray player prices drop, then I'll have to invest in that format, if they haven't done HD-Downloads already!

  4. Although Warner and New Line are now exclusive to Blu-Ray, HD DVD still has Paramount, Dreamworks and Universal.

So to say that HD DVD has NO exclusive studios anymore is jumping the gun a bit. Saying that HD DVD will soon have no exclusive studios in the future is a more accurate statement.
