  1. squid

    worms

    soft crab

    shrimp

    smaller fish

  2. The two top baits for So.Cal surf fishing are sand crabs and mussels. You can buy either of them at bait shops (mussels are sold both in the shell and the meat in a plastic tub), or if you don't mind getting a little bit wet you can dig up sand crabs on the beach or pull mussels off pier pilings or rocks at low tide. Split the mussels open and scrape the meat out and hang it on your hook as a gooey blob, or impale the entire sand crab on your hook, hiding the hook inside it. Cast out just past the breakers, with a sinker heavy enough to keep your offering from getting washed in immediately.

Other stuff like squid, anchovies, and shrimp also work, but mussels and sand crabs are the nearshore fishes' natural food.

  3. the best is moon shrimp, sand crabs, rags, mussels just collect them at the shore during low tides.Much cheaper this way when u learn to get your baits by yourself.Try checking it out at some sites for bait gathering diy

style, also those peeler crabs its good too.All these r game fish baits, when u can use these baits in large quantity without having to go broke then u r sure of a big bad boy also be much prepared for these game cos its going to be a surprise.Their range is from 5 lb to 150 lb even at the surf.

  4. easiest bait would probably be frozen bait, because its cheap and available everywhere. like frozen squid,  shrimp, mackerel, anchovies....  Make sure you secure it well or use a hook with bait catcher barbs.    The best(takes preparation would probably be to use sand crabs (catch yourself the day before or in the morning,or pay some kids to do it.  or if you are lucky enough to find live anchovies, squid.  also remember you might want to use smaller gear and catch smaller surf fish with the frozen bait , then use your catch to bait your bigger rig and go after the monsters.

  5. Soft shelled sand crabs if you are fishing for corbina and croakers. I would recommend calms for rays and fish for sharks.
