It's the end of the world... ?

There's this rumor going around my school that some scientists are trying to combine atoms, but this could result in the destruction of the earth... meaning, all of the earth will be gone... meaning, it'll be the end of the world...

At first, I didn't believe it. But now my physics teachers are counting down the days (there's 19 days until it happens btw)

Is this true???

  2. Mankind doesn't have the power or energies at his disposal to make a dent in the earth. As for the end of the world - it will come like a thief in the night.

  3. End of the world - utter garbage. An experiment that physics teachers might well count down the days until - absolutely.

There is going to be an experiment using a particle accelerator called the Large Hadron Collider, making particles collide together with a great deal of energy, but this kind of energy happens all the time because of cosmic rays. The hope is that by observing the products of these collisions, we will learn more about the fundamental nature of the universe.

  4. you are one of the most gullible people i have ever seen. no its not true.

they are working on making antimatter though, but that still wouldnt blow up the earth.

    make it a good day

  5. Your physics teacher(s) may be simply trying to build interest, and get students to study the issue, learning something.  Atoms combine to form molecules, and this is very routine.  "Fusion" is the combination of two atoms into one, and is much less common (on earth) but is very common on the Sun, and has been done on Earth also.
