  1. Unfortunately none of the above people (except hwinnum) have done their research. Testing is done, but the Government doesn't do it--the seed companies do. There is no oversight, as the Government  doesn't classify GMOs as any different than non-GMOs.  And they refuse to mandate labeling products that contain GMOs, even though the vast majority of consumers are in favor of it.

  2. "In the US, as you know, GMO foods undergo NO mandatory government (or 3rd party) safety testing -- NONE -- and are permitted -- unlabeled and therefore untraceable -- in the food supply by the FDA and USDA. Their industry-friendly rationale was explained at that meeting. GMO foods are presumed to be safe according to FDA's Dr. Barbara Schneeman although their safety has not been tested. FDA and independent research, she said, consistently shows that consumers would not buy GMO foods if they knew they were genetically altered. Therefore, she explained, to keep consumers from making the "wrong decision" and rejecting GMO food, the FDA prevents labeling GMO foods to protect the consumer from "false and misleading information". This US policy was accurateley characterized by the EU delegate as "weird"

  3. it is not true....most of your major crops today are genetically modified or engineered in some way.   dont worry about it at all!!

  4. When the first Roundup Ready soybeans were introduced in the early 90s, a report about the environmental impact statement was written by a Monsanto representative.  After she completed the report, she was let go by Monsanto and hired by the EPA.  She approved her own report.  Whether this is true or not, I do not know.  It does sound like a Monsanto tactic.  Corrupt b******s.

  5. It's not true.

And even if it was, GMOs are safe anyway.

  6. Genetically engineered plants are regulated by three government agencies: the FDA, the USDA, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The FDA ensures that foods made from these plants are safe for humans and animals to eat, the USDA makes sure the plants are safe to grow, and the EPA ensures that pesticides introduced into the plants are safe for human and animal consumption and for the environment. While these agencies act independently, they have a close working relationship since many products come under the review of all three.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) gives the FDA authority to regulate foods for humans and animals, including foods derived from bioengineered plants. Under the act, companies have a legal obligation to ensure that any food they sell meets the safety standards of the law. The safety standards apply equally to conventional food and genetically engineered food. If a food does not meet the safety standards, the FDA has the authority to take it off the market.

  7. It is not true. FDA, EPA and USDA these are the three organizations involved in issuing clearance to any genetically engineered crop in USA. this will be done only after thorough safety testing like food safety, environment safety etc.
