Question:

It always seem like my fave vegetarian foods are discontinued?

I use to love veggie egg rolls that my store carried. They contained absolutely no meat or beef/chicken stock. Well, they discontinued it.

Next up was my fave Campbell's Garden Vegetable Soup. It's now gone, as of last month. Every other Healthy Choice soup contains beef or chicken stock, except the tomato. What is up with it? Are there really that few vegetarians that these companies can't keep a good stock of meat free food options?

While I mostly come up with my own recipes, sometimes I would like to just heat up some soup. LOL

Oh and my store has just said they will no longer sell Morning Star Farm non-meat griller crumbles. Which I loved to use to veggie chili.

Basically, this is a rant. Anyone feel the same way?

  1. I've been trying to make a lot of food myself instead of buying the pre-made stuff, it's healthier for you anyways and that way you're SURE there aren't animal bits hidden inside of it.

As for the soup, try this brand called Amy's.  I LOVE their Lentil Soup!  Amy's has a lot of vegetarian (and I think vegan also) options and different foods.

I don't know how your store can stop selling the Morning Star crumbles!  You must be in a small town because nearly all the stores around here have those.  When I was in a small town, our grocery store didn't have many options and there weren't many vegetarians there so it was tough.  Maybe you should write-in to the store's manager or talk to them about taking away their vegetarian options.  He/She may not realize that they are taking away all of the meat-free options and they may be willing to add some items back and instead remove other items.  It's worth a shot.

It seems like there are more vegetarians lately, at least around here!  People stopped asking me why I'm a vegetarian and accept it and just say "oh, cool." Instead of doing the 50 questions and trying to justify why they eat meat.  I also have a lot more veggie options in the grocery store and in the "naturals" section.  It may be because I live near Tacoma now and it's a larger city.  Who knows.

Good luck, I hope your store stops s******g over the vegetarians!

  2. i had been a vegitarein for 5 or 6 years, i am not any more but i still feel the same way as you and i really think that is wrong and i think something should be done about it. hope i helped. :")

  3. As to the problems with the soups - it might be a pain - which I really, REALLY understand since I have been working extra hours this week and been eating boxed/canned food vs. making my own - your going to have to make your own.  I know - not like you don't know how.  Just that there are times when it just plain is easier to just open a can/box.

The problem isn't that there are not enough vegetarians/vegans out there.  I have seen more people turning towards eating less meat for some time now.  It has to do with large companies owning other companies and stock in them and wanting to make sure that those products have a place in the market place (my personal view - no proof - just common sense and watching the stock market).

As to why your store isn't going to carry the Morning Star Farm crumbles - don't know why.  They are not discontinued.  My guess is that maybe that they are not selling well in your store as the only reason.

Such grates on me as well.  Several of my favorite products from "Fantastic World Foods" are being taken out of where I mostly shop.  But then it also seems like I am pretty much the only person that is buying it in town.  Then there is the FAVORITE soy milk that I used to love to heat up in the evening - coffee flavored - that I now have to make a 35 minute drive to get.

I say complain to the store.  Complain to the company.  They count every contact from a consumer as repesenting 10 actual customers (since most will not write).  It can't hurt - and it actually might help.  Not the best example - but remember when they tried to change "Coke" around a few years ago how the complaints changed things?  It just very well might work.

  4. I was a vegetarian for four years and I completely understand your frustration.  It's really annoying!  I think one of the reasons why vegetarian food doesn't do as well is because they over price it.  If the fake meat options were a reasonable price, they would probably sell a lot more and make a lot more in the end.

Is there a large Chinese or Indian population in your area?  Almost all Indian food is vegetarian and it is very flavorful.  Also, you might try and find a Chinese Buddhist (or just Buddhist) food store in your area.  Some of their stuff is so believable its scary (but if you look close you can see its not really meat).  Monks have been vegetarians for centuries so they have mastered the art of fake meat.

In short, this problem at least gives you motivation to make meals yourself which is far better anyways.  If companies don't want to market to vegetarians or healthy people, then they don't need our money!

  5. I do not feel that way.  The main reason items are discontinued is that they do not sell.

  6. Try Quorn! They have everything! Pretend burgers, escalopes, sausages, chicken fillets, strips. Delicious :)

  7. Keep rockin and rollin. There's other good vegetarian food out there. You just have to find it.

Here are some of my favorites from the local grocery:

*Amy's vegetarian burritos (i add diced onion and tomoto on top)

*Lean Quisine veggie egg rolls (yummy)

*Morning Star Spicy Black Bean Burgers (great for loaded nachos)

*Morning Star Mushroom Soy Burgers (great to crumble for spaghetti)

----Also, lots of restaurants are adding vegetarian sections on their menus. They usually offer imitation chicken, imitation beef and imitation shrimp.

  8. You need to change stores and tell the manager of the old one why your leaving. I think one reason stores have a hard time selling veg food is the way they stock the stuff. Why can't they put everything veg in one section, instead of scattered all over the store. My store puts Boca products in the frozen meat section, kind of dumb ha?

  9. I am not a vegetarian but I am a person who has had things not work out & found a way to live with it. I had a restaurant in my area that sold this great string beans (had bacon in it) & I needed to eat veggies & didn't like most. So I loved theirs but they would do things & I can't remember what but I didn't want to go to there restaurant since they didn't seem to appreciate their customers. So I got on the internet & found it was easy to make the same food at home. I started doing things like this & now rarely eat out & I was an eating out addict before. So gettting mad & doing something positive about it turned my life into a direction that has really helped me. I rarely eat anything packaged anymore. This all changed my habits.....So is it possible you could make your own soup? or could you start a vegatarian cooking group in your area & have a party once a month where you all bring your best recipes for everyone to try out & then do this at someones house who has a copier & can make the guests copies or can you e-mail each other copies. Use your imagination. I coach people to think in different ways so ask yourself how you can take this situation & turn it into something beneficial.
