How lazy as a society are we that we can't read the news on the internet.

YES! Thank you, and I thought I was alone in this.

Its actually faster and more informative for me to READ than to sit through the compulsory adverts.

I mainly browse economics and finance news, which is almost always "stock footage" of the trading floor or buildings. I'll choose a text article because:

a) it loads faster, uses less bandwidth

b) I can concentrate on the content rather than the delivery

c) you can pass it on, or take passages from it easily
