Question:

It appears my Ethernet connection on my mother board is defective, I had a power surge and lost the modem?

the modem has been replaced but still unable to obatin an ethenet power light on the modem.. It would appear the the ethenet connection is part of the mother board. If I put a new ethenet card in the PCI slot will this then takeover the mother board ethenet function, any help appreciated

  1. If the ethernet port on the tower is dead, then you can put a new ethernet card in. Just install it, and your pc should recognize the new hardware. Install the drivers that came with it and you should be all set. If you are worried about the dead ethernet port, go to device manager and disable it.


  2. yes, as long as you disable the old device in device management

  3. Yes,, a pci ethernet card will over ride your onboard ethernet port..Windows will detect the new device, and away you go.

    You could also go into Device manager and disable your onboard nic, but it shouldn't cause a conflict

    Best to spend a few dollars on good surge protection..
