jonmcn49. I am not an Anthropologist, but I do see the need for abandoning words in our dictionaries that do nothing but cause grief to many of us who have to deal with what are called racial attacks on a daily basis, which are nothing more than colour predjudice.

  1. it is a part of cultural identity. even if anthropologists do not believe in race, it doesn't change social perceptions.  p.c. logic never has, it is like wishing the communism produced the perfect society.

  2. That is the opinion of my former sociology professor, but I don't buy it.

  3. There is one human species. That species has some variations in populations; just like many other species.

Try not to dichotomize everything, as that is also established in anthropological circles

  4. We shall overcommmm somedayyyyyyyyy.

  5. Correct but many people don't yet know this.

None other than science taught us that there were three major races on earth. This was bad science but no body knew it.

Now the human genome has been traced we know that the other race, along with us, died out about 35 to 40,000 years ago.

Everybody on earth for the last 35,000 years is of the same race.

  6. I absolutely agree, we are all one and the sooner we realise it the better off the human race and our world will be!!

  7. It is a well established fact that the race paradigm is an unscientific, inaccurate way of describing human variability. While we are all more alike than we are different, we are still different in many ways, and good methods have been established for quantifying and qualifying many of those similarities and differences. For the ones we don't have a handle on (like intelligence), the worst thing we can do is to stuff them into the preconceived boxes that comprise racial studies.

We are no more one race than we are fifty races.

EDIT: Sigh...In layman's terms, race is a bad way of doing things. There isn't one human race, there aren't many human races. There are simply differences, and there are better ways of classifying those differences than using race.

Another thing...why doesn't anyone on Answers ever spell my name right? I figure the layman and the academic alike could at least look on the page at how I spell it...

  8. It is like saying there is only one bird, dog or fish.   But we can see there is more than one and that they cannot intermingle with each other within that group.

While all humans can, man finds a way to distinguish himself from others....to give himself self worth.  (otherwise every males name would be d**k and every girl, Jane.)

  9. Oh, how I wish it were that easy! If only people would teach their children through example to look beyond physical characteristics, and see individual people as the people they are! But it's not that easy. That's not to say that we couldn't ever all co-exist peacefully, because we could. If people would learn to appreciate our differences and respect eachother's right to be who they are culturally, the world would be a better place. Rather than saying, "You're different from me, therefore I don't like you", if we would instead say, "You're different from me, and although I may not agree, I respect your right to hold true to your differences", then there would be no reason to hate. As humans, we DO have different cultures, and religions, etc., that's part of what makes us unique. That's not to say that any one is better or worse than any other,we're just different. I personally think that is beautiful. We could learn a lot from eachother, while still maintaining our own cultural identity, if we would stop expecting to change eachother, and if we could stop worrying about offending eachother by "saying the wrong thing."

  10. There is only one race- the human race (homo sapien sapien). It is impossible to categorize humanity into races because there are no concrete criteria for comparison. Yes, there are variations among the human population, but there are no specific traits that cannot be found in other so called "races."

In academic circles it is a very widely accepted fact. Take any intro level cultural anthropology class and you should learn this.

  11. There is just the ONE human species, which has branched off into different races, largely dictated by climatic conditions.  The different races have differing physical features, adapted to the climatic conditions they live in and the type of diet they have available.  There are differences also brought about by culture.  Being of the same species, all races of humans have the same general brain capacity, and therefore have the same possibilities and potential. But there is no such thing as the Human Race!  The Rat Race, yes, but no Human Race!
