It was a good win for us, says Sporting Lisbon coach Domingos Paciência – Liga Sagres News
Sporting Lisbon coach, Domingos Paciência, claims that the win against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/SC-Braga-c40460 was good one for his side. The Lions took on the Archbishops in the Portuguese Cup and managed to emerge with a 2-0 victory, something which the tactician claims was quite important
for his side.
The Lisbon giants hosted their arch-rivals, SC Braga, at Estadio Jose Alvalade yesterday in their Portuguese Cup tie. Domingos Paciência’s men were labelled as favourites for the tie, especially given that they were playing at home.
Sporting justified their credentials after cruising to a 2-0 victory against Leonardo Jardim’s struggling side, who had been hit by a wave of injuries.
The lack of players clearly showed on the pitch, as the hosts were able to take the lead in the 14th minute.
Matias Fernandez started a nifty counterattack and played the ball to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-Capel-c11100 and he found the back of the net for the first of the night.
SC Braga began to rejuvenate themselves and looked to get back on level terms, but despite the best efforts of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-c16384 Viena, the visitors were unable to convert their pressure in the score-line.
And they were made to pay for their failure to score, as Sporting netted their second of the night through Emiliano Insua.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 man was in the right place in the right time, as Matias Fernandez’s free kick was spilt by goalkeeper, Berni and it simply deflected off the defender and rolled into the goal.
After conceding twice, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Leonardo-c22056 Jardim’s men again responded superbly by continuing to attack Rui Patricio’s goal. But they were still 2-0 down at the break.
In the second half, Braga had Elderson sent off for a tackle on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Elias-c12267 and had to counter their opponents with a numerical advantage.
However Sporting were unable to add to their tally and the final score finished 2-0 in their favour.
After the win, coach Domingos Paciência claimed that they were able to win their arch-rivals due to the quality in their ranks and it was an important victory they had achieved.
Speaking to reporters, the trainer said that his side had achieved a good result but they could have netted more goals given their numerical superiority.
"It was a special game because it was the next phase and this team won with quality. We played at home and we wanted to take the game. We scored the goal and we were good, except at the end of the first part in which Braga pressed well and caused us some
difficulties.”
“After the expulsion in the second part, we went a little easier about our work. It is a good and fair result for us. We scored two goals but we could have scored more,” Domingos Paciência was quoted as saying.
Sporting Lisbon now take on Benfica in the Primeira Liga on the 27th of November.
