Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan vice-captain and world-class all-rounder, has expressed that playing the final of a World Cup was his dream and missing the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 was the worst day of his life.
The 25-year-old cricketer is one of those who took up the game professionally after Sri Lanka’s triumph in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Cricket World Cup 1996.
The Lankan Tigers qualified for the World Cup final last year, beating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 in the semi-final at Colombo. The all-rounder however, injured his right thigh-muscle in the match against the Black Caps, consequently being ruled
out of the final, which India went on to win.
In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, the cricketer from Colombo shared that he tried his best to regain fitness ahead of the finale but had to forego the chance eventually.
Mathews said, "I can safely say that was the worst day of my life. When I got injured in the semi-final I immediately knew that it was pretty bad. I tried to do the best I could to get back in to fitness with the help of Dr Young,
but to be honest, with only a couple of days to go there was no chance of a tear like that healing in time."
The young all-rounder is considered to be one of the most talented players in the country, who also has a very impressive approach towards the game. It is primarily the reason why Mathews is tipped to be Sri Lanka’s future captain
in all three formats of the game, once http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397 decides to call it a day.
The middle-order batsman revealed that he had always dreamt of winning a mega event for the Island and had a great opportunity to do so, if he had remained fit.
"It was very disappointing. It was one of my dreams to play in a World Cup final and win it for my country, but unfortunately that just didn't work out," the all-rounder added.
