I was watching Moonstruck starring Cher, well, I seen her mother in the moving cooking breakfast. She had taken a peice of french bread and cut out a round hole in the middle and cracked a egg in the center. Fried it on both sides and served it. Does anyone know what this dish is called?

Further, a recipe for this dish?

  1. i make them w/ pancakes , you should see the looks on peoples faces when they cut into a pancake + it bleeds yellow all of a sudden . never heard a name for them .

  2. My mom used to make them and she called them gas house eggs.

  3. I've heard it called toad in a hole. Weird name, but hey, whatever.

The french toast idea sounds yummy!

  4. I am italian and that's not a typical italian breakfast.

  5. no idea, but i think they must use nice eggy, puffy bread.

EGG IN A BASKET IS ENGLISH....SO I DOUBT THE WOMAN LIVING IN NY's LITTLE ITALY WOULD CALL IT THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. not italian...Italians don't eat eggs for breakfast.

We used to call them piggie in a blanket.  Rather good, try with mapel syrup.

  7. My mum would make this when i was little and she called it egg in the basket.  It just a variation of French Toast which is make a batter with 1-2 eggs, pour in some milk and mix well.

Then get your bread and dip it in the batter and fry up in a frypan with a little oil, once its browned turn over and presto.

  8. It goes by several names. I don't know if it's actually Italian or not. I call it "eggie in the basket". It's real tasty.

All you need is a piece of bread (heck, even wonder bread works great) and an egg. Use a knife or cookie cutter and cut a hole out of the center of the bread. Butter up the bread (with softened butter) and then put it on a hot frying pan. Be sure you greased the pan real well.

Then just crack the egg in the center and cook until the top of the egg is just turning white then flip it and continuing cooking until however you like your eggs.

    Bon appetit!
