Italian Fencers make clean sweep at Saint Petersburg Grand Prix for Women’s Foil: Fencing News
The blue female fencers shined through Saint Petersburg Grand Prix as Italian women made clean sweep in the Women’s Foil Grand Prix tournament. Italian Valentina Vezzali won a gold medal, Arianna Errigo grabbed the silver medal, while Elisa Di Francisca
clinched the bronze medal in the Foil Grand Prix on June 6 at Saint Petersburg.
The Italian women not only won all the medals in Foil's category, but also captured six top ten places in the rankings. Italian Benedetta Durando lost their bout in quarter-final round and she was placed at the seventh spot in the rankings. Valentina Cipriani
was placed at eighth, while Ilaria Salvatori got the tenth spot in the Foil Grand Prix’ rankings. Eight Italian Fencers were listed in top 16 fencers list of the tournament. Even the boards of St. Petersburg, then, have certified the status of female athletes
as blue.
The head coach of Italian Fencing Team, Stefano Cerioni, gave his comments on that amazing victory. He said, "This is the success of the whole group, which can gloat not only to see three blue the first three places of the podium, but also count in five
Italian athletes in the top eight and eight in the first sixteen.”
Italian men had already won the gold and silver medals in Men’s Foil Grand Prix events in ST Petersburg on June 4. Andrea Baldini and Andrea Cassara were the Male fencers who won gold and silver medals during ST Petersburg. The leaders of the Russian team,
Inna Deriglazova, Larissa Korobeinikova, Eugene Lamonova and Aida Shanaeva were confident enough to come out to table of sixteen. But at that stage of the competition, they were put into the fight against each other. Lamonova Eugene and Ina Deriglazova, were
the two Russian, who could qualify for the quarterfinal where they were standing against rating leaders FIE and owners of the World Cup for the last two years, the Italians Valentina Vezzali and Arianna Errigo. They failed to pass them and were eliminated
in the quarterfinal.
Italian fencers are performing good towards their qualifications for 2012 Olympic Games.
