Italian Fencers score a remarkable victory in the 2011 European Fencing Championships
The Blue Fencers showed excellent performance at the second day of the 2011 European Fencing Championships at Sheffield on July 14. The Blue Foil squad made a clean sweep by winning all the medals of the Men’s Foil Individual competition on the second day
of the Championships.
Italy's George Avola clinched the gold medal, Andrea Cassara won silver, while Andrea Baldini grabbed the bronze medal in the Men’s Foil Individual sector of the Championships. The Foil's Head Coach, Stephen Wen, said, "It’s almost historic hat-trick. The
last one-two-three on the podium back to 1934. I am really happy for the three boys. BaldinI and Cassara continue to hold the top ranking of the world view of London, while Avola is a success that is worth a lot. He had not yet won important races between

The winner, Avola, started his day with pool matches, where he competed in the six bouts. Avola remained undefeated in the all bouts of the pool matches. With excellent starting victories, he advanced to the direct elimination round, where he started from
the table of 32. He was given an automatic bye in the table of 64 due to his incredible performance in the pool's bouts.
Avola took his first victory in the table matches over Great Britain’s Laurence Halsted which he won with a score of 15-9 touches. In the table of 16, Greece Theodoros Nakis was Avola’s next target. Nakis was also dropped on the same 15-9 touches and Avola
qualified for the quarter-finals round. Avola defeated the German, Alexander Bachmann, in the quarter-final round. The score was tied at 9-9, in nine-minute bouts which gave an additional minute to both the athletes. The Blue overcame the German in the additional
minute by scoring the decider hit.
The semi-final victory was taken over by the Russian, Alexey Cheremisinov,15-08. There were both Blue fencers in the final bout, which had a strong competition. After a close score of 15-14, Alova surprised the crowd by getting victory over World’s Number
One, Andrea Cassara.
